For many years around the first of August we rendezvoused with climbing friends in the Needles of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Climbing near the Needles Highway brought us to the attention of Midwest tourists unable to understand what we were about. Though at first their questions and interpretations were hilarious it soon became a trial. Evy Blum and I spent an afternoon with an iron and iron-on tape to make Pinnacle Repair Service shirts for our heroes. That worked!

On a trip to Joshua Tree in 1994 Bob and I went out to climb Rubicon. On the way back we ran into a youthful looking group calling themselves the "wilted flower children". Bob was the center of attention! My wife Lori took this photo and sent it to Bob who sent us a sketch naming all those in the photograph. Allen Steck was quite interested in the route Bob and I had climbed and proceeded to inquire for some beta. Bob's beta in classic wit that only Bob could pull off with his unmistakable grin replied with the beta for Rubicon," it's sustained but submits to good footwork". Bob in the most serious look stopped and shook my hand.
